Jane - I think you should tell your sister to shut up! I own a restaurant and I would do everything I possibly good to help keep a child quiet and unobtrusive rather than have it whine around the place and upset my other diners. Your child behaved in a perfectly appropriate way given the circumstances and your sister should have been proud to go out with you and her niece. If the restaurant had no problem with it, then neither should she. On the flip side, I used to be one of those childless people who criticised people in restaurants for how they handle their kids, but not anymore since the birth of my son last year! I would happily pay good money to have my child fall asleep at the table! Your sister will learn the error of her ways in time.

Oh, my goodness - but how our perceptions of children's proper behavior changes when we have our own! Have you ever heard that quote from John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester? He said, "Before I got married I had six theories about bringing up children; now I have six children and no theories."
If your sister had children - she'd have complimented you. In MY book - quiet and asleep is MUCH better than tired, whiny and cranky! So good job, Mom!

Please Help! This event has already taken place. Years ago, actually, and I still think @it:

I visited my sister with my 2 children aged 7 & 9 at the time. We had a long day in the city and went out to a casual neighborhood restaurant they frequented where we were seated in a booth. (Nicer than a chain, but not a five star restaurant...) My youngest was so tired. She put her head down on my lap in the booth next to her and fell asleep. I was just happy she wasn't whining! Later my sister chastised me for embarassing her by allowing my child to behave so badly in the restaurant. She insisted that children in HER city don't do that. I have felt guilty and angry about that comment ever since. You may have guessed that she has no kids of her own. Should I have insisted that she keep her head up and stay awake, or was it acceptable to allow her to fall asleep on my lap?
